What are your areas of expertise?
Before my time at Gilstrap & Associates I worked at a partial residential eating disorder clinic. Which means I have experience with working with individuals with eating disorders and other areas associated with them such as: depression, anxiety, PTSD, and self-harm.
What is your main goal when working with a client?
My main goal when working with a client is to find out what the client’s needs/goals are and then help the client find the best possible way to achieve those needs/goals.
What is your approach and what methods do you employ?
Although I am studying to be a licensed mental health counseling I am specializing in art therapy so I like to implement the arts in some way into my sessions. I find that using art during sessions opens new avenues for clients to express their needs and to find solutions to their needs.
What age groups do you most often work with?
I have mainly worked with teenagers and young adults.
Are you passive or active in the session? What can a client typically expect sessions to be like while working with you?
It all depends, but normally I will start off having the client take the session in the direction they want to and if the client needs a more active presence I will adjust accordingly.
What is your background and what are your credentials?
I spent a year working at an eating disorder clinic with many different clients and therapist, which allowed for me to learn a wide variety of techniques and work in several different counseling environments, such as group, family, and individual therapy. This environment also allowed for me to quickly learn flexibility and how to tailor sessions to the individual needs of clients, especially in a group therapy setting.
What is the reason you decided to get into counseling?
I decided to get into counseling because I have a genuine love for people, especially people who are hurting and need help but aren’t able to help themselves.
